In 2018, Singapore generated 763,000 tonnes of food waste.

By the time you’re done reading this article, 1.5 tonnes of food will have been thrown away. That’s how much food waste we generated every minute as a nation.

Every day, we are throwing away more than 2,000 tonnes of food on average. That’s 2 million kilograms.

These come from food manufacturers, hotels, malls, markets, hawker centres, schools, households and other F&B premises.

Out of these, only 16% is recycled. The rest is incinerated and put into landfills.
